The power tool of writing – Narrative Distance underpins every aspect from showing and telling, to controlling pace, building emotion and getting right to the heart of your characters. In this masterclass, you’ll learn the levels of intimacy between character and reader and just how you can pack the ultimate punch with your prose. Narrative Distance is a class for all skill levels, from beginner to pro looking to enhance their knowledge.
About the workshop:
I was lucky to learn the wonder of Narrative Distance (Psychic Distance) from two incredible mentors. Back then, it was a lightbulb but the tool took a long time to hone and I’m still working on it. It’s one of the most powerful tools in writing and controls every aspect to some degree. A basic way to describe Narrative Distance is “show and tell,” but often when a writer or teacher mentions this, it is too vague and doesn’t explain that it is a spectrum: Narrative Distance controls the intimacy (or lack of it) you feel with the character, and how much you’ll know or want to know them; the pace of the scene whether that is forcing the reader to turn the page or give them space to catch their breath. Knowledge gaps and opening up how to write unreliable narrators – and so much more.
Learning the levels and how to use them transforms a writer’s work but mastering the levels sends a book soaring into readers’ hearts. It can make a book not only unputdownable but re-readable.
At the Golden Crown Literary Society Writing Academy, I love showing the students this magical tool. It’s the session where everyone sits up and has that lightbulb moment and their writing begins to change. It’s not easy to implement, but, by understanding what it means and what it does, you see past show and tell, begin to see just why the master-writers do so well, and, with a lot of elbow grease, you can lift your writing as they do.
When it comes to classes, I would never say I’m a teacher. That seems to come with a badge that says I’m the ultimate expert. I’m not. I simply share my passion for all the cool things I’ve learned along my writing journey and all the pitfalls I’ve walked smack into along the way – and this class is that special moment. Please drop in and let me tell and show you a story…
